Screen Damage
Computer Screen Problems
From work tasks and video calls to streaming, browsing, and gaming, your computer screen is one of the most essential components of your device. With constant use, it’s common for screens on laptops, all-in-ones, and Chromebooks to experience wear and tear over time.
Computer displays rely on a combination of hardware components such as the LCD or LED panel, backlight, connectors, and internal cables. If any of these components are damaged or malfunctioning, you may experience issues such as:
- Cracked or shattered screens
- Flickering or dim display
- Dead pixels or discoloration
- Lines across the screen
- No display or black screen
Before seeking professional repair, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.
Troubleshooting Computer Screen Problems
Screen issues don’t always mean physical damage—sometimes the problem can be related to software or connections.
Start by restarting your computer. A simple reboot can resolve temporary software glitches that may affect display performance.
Next, check your brightness settings and ensure they haven’t been accidentally reduced. You can also connect your computer to an external monitor. If the external display works fine, the issue is likely with your screen hardware rather than the system itself.
If your screen is flickering or showing unusual colors, try updating your graphics drivers. Outdated or corrupted drivers can often cause display issues.
For laptops, inspect the screen hinges and gently adjust the angle. If the display changes when moving the screen, there may be a loose internal cable (commonly known as a ribbon cable).
In cases of minor display issues like stuck pixels, lightly applying pressure to the affected area with a soft cloth may help, but this should be done carefully to avoid further damage.
